shut down stall

By Cong ·
Hi all
I have an NT Server 4.0 with sp6a. This has been happen for a month already. Everytime when I shut it down, it hung showing that stupid hourglass, I had to do a cold boot to shut it down. This is a very broad question but I just need some help of how to find out which service is hanging.

Does it ever shutdown no matter how long you wait? Think of that last program you installed or new device that was added/deleted, software upgrade/update. Try uninstalling all software and reboot after each one.

Go to: Start>Run> and type Regedit

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Look in the Run key, RunOnce key and RunOnceEx. Those are the programs running in the background. That may give you a clue.

I've had this problem with a few ver of windows
and never found any reasonable cause!
nt clears all it's cashed data to the hard disk at that point! Now you know what service caused it
however the olny fix is to reinstall.

I hope you don't have to much to reinstall
may be bill will give us a real service pack ?

good luck reinstalling suck's!

Knowing what services you have running could give me a better idea. I have similar issues before with servers with Exchange server installed. Try stopping all non system services. Then shut down your server if your server shuts down you at least have a pointer as to what services to look at and then may only need to reinstall that app.
