    Shutdown hangs in Windows 95

    Locked

    by ekb ·

I have experience quite some number of Win95 hangs during shutdown at the “Please Wait While Windows is shutting down” screen.

I have search through the net for solution, fortunately i found an easy way to resolve this. Which is,

Create a shortcut icon with this command in it, “rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows”. Now every time i click on this icon it will shutdown cleanly and fast!

Now, my question is what is this command mean? What i can guess of is it shuts down without waiting other background application to quit. Any impact on this?

I’m glad if there are some ideas/solution other than the command i mentioned.

    Please help !
    Thank you.

Yes,what you think could be right.Windows doesn’t wait for the applications to close by themselves. It simply closes all programs and shuts down.If you have any open applications at that time, then you will lose your data.It is better to close all theapplications, saving any required data before using this command.
If you add ‘exec’ to ‘exitwindows’ in the command then instead of Shutting down completely,Windows closes all programs and Re-Starts itself.

I have seen this many times, updating the bios for windows has helped me many times. The other way is go to device manager, system devices,PCI Bus, bios and drivers don’t really agree with each other. The computer does not know that it need to send a signal to the power unit on the mother board to shut down. The other thing you can do is “warning if you don’t have drivers can do more harm then good” is delete the pci bus and reboot, all the mother board device will be found again. I wish you luck

Microsoft admitted that they do have a problems with shutdowning their OS but this was on Win 98. They release a patch to fix it. It’s called 4786US8.exe (505 KB) if you want to look in MS knowledge database. It may help also with Win 95. Try it…

Yes, i’m aware of the Win98 shutdown problem and there is a patch for it. But all my computers is running on Win95.

I have tried applied the Win98 patch on my Win95 but it didn’t work anyway.

First, 95 had a nasty habit of losing a driver in the sound setup, hanging it during shutdown, remove the shutdown sound in the control panel, and it’s solved, best to remove the Startup sound too, as it can hang at the last screen comming up also. The command you are using seems to get to the run dll command prior to the sound command, allowing it to complete it’s cycle, and it is the same command found in the Start menu, except it goes right to the Run Dll , rather than look at the driver setup found in the string associated with the Normal Shutdown command, it still sees the applications, but goes around the checks at the beginning, and closes all, but will ask if something is not responding, same as normal shutdown. I use slow shutdown, which is the same as 95 (I use 98), and experiance no problems with the direct command [ C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe, exitwindows ] , and I run several hundred applications without a problem. Hope this sheds a little light on it for you.

Windows Version C will hang up if you are logged onto a LAN and you try and shut down without first logging off the network, try logging off first then hit cancel to get past the log in, then click start, shut down and you should shut down correctly.

I recently had the same problem, waiting for the wait screen to disappear… and waiting.. and waiting…
I found a website that was quite helpful, the page is entitled: How to troubleshoot Windows 95 shutdown problems. It is by Bud Allen and appears under Bud’s Windows Troubleshooter. The address is http://www.geocities.com/~budallen

      Hope this helps

Instead of forcing a shutdown you should concentrat on finding a solution of the problem ie why windows is not shutting down cleanly.
Do an ALT+CTRL+DELETE and see what processes are running then end each task one by one to identify the culprit.
You can the do a repair for this problem uccurs when a task is not responding.
