shutdown problem in Win Me

By Daz'n'Ash ·
I have a computer here that has Windows Millennium Edition on it and although this is a reasonably modern system, all windows updates are fine, anti virus up to date drivers are fine, no installation conflicts, the hard disk drive has plenty of freespace on it, all PCI cards are frimly seated as is the ram chips.

The problem is that most times when the computer is shut down, it hangs during shutdown and the message It Is now safe to turn off your computer message does not appear. There is just a black screen and the computer is still running.

Anyone got a solution to this problem?

shutdown problem in Win Me

Hi
Win95 when it is doing a shutdown send a message to each application telling that they should close it is doing a shutdown and wait for answer. In later relases of windows such as win98 it send a message ones for all and no wait so some sopftware may hang so it could be your case. I would stop the antivirus first then use msconfig to stop other software then reboot and see which one is making the proble. There aaother causes such as ACPI problem too.

Good luck

Mohamed

I really hate rejecting answers, it seems that Microsoft can't even help with this one. I appreciate the effort to help.

I had this same problem...in Windows 2000. It seems that the problem could be traced on my machine to leftover or parts of virus remnants.. I was fixed by getting the latest Panda Antivirus and updating.. all seems ok now..Dave.
