By ahafez ·
Hi All
I have a P3 500 MHz, ATX case, and running Win Xp
when shutting down, window closes ok, but the computer does not switch off and gives the message (It is safe to switch off now), though it was working ok under win98

This sounds strange. XP might not recognize your current power management abilities.

Here is a troubleshooting list from MS themselves.

You can also find additional info at http://labmice.techtarget.com (look under windows xp-> troubleshooting).

For what ever reason, XP does not always enable APM when you install it.

Right click on your My Computer icon.

Select properties.

Click on the Hardware tab.

Click on device manager.

Click on View.

Select Show Hidden Devices.

Scroll through the list and find APM.

Right click on APM and select enable.

Close device manager and re-boot your PC.

Shut down should now turn your PC off.
