Signals that can damage flash chip

    by Oblivion99 ·

    Dear all

If someone with bad intentions would use signals, to damage the flash chip within a USB drive or laptop.

    1.
What kind of signals can damage the flash chip within a USB drive or laptop, from 2-3 metres away?

    2.
How big would such a signal-device need to be?

    3.
Such a signal-device, would that be something everyone could get?

I am not seeking illicit advice.
I would just like to know, if this is possible and something everyone could do.

    Thank you

    Regarding signals:

I am only familiar with something like EMP

    I also found:
Electromagnetic waves can potentially affect electronic devices even when they are not powered on or connected to an electrical source. Here’s how:

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI): Electromagnetic waves can induce currents in conductive materials. If a device has components made of conductive materials (like metal), strong electromagnetic fields can induce small electric currents, which might disrupt the operation of sensitive circuits.

Radiation Exposure: High-intensity electromagnetic radiation, such as that from powerful radio transmitters or certain types of lasers, can physically damage electronic components through mechanisms like dielectric breakdown or heating, even if the device is off. However, typical everyday exposure to electromagnetic waves (like radio waves or microwaves) is generally not strong enough to cause damage.

Static Electricity: Devices can be susceptible to static discharge, which can occur from electromagnetic fields in the environment. This can damage sensitive components if the discharge occurs while handling or near the device.

Long-term Exposure: Prolonged exposure to certain types of electromagnetic fields, particularly at high intensities, can potentially degrade materials in electronic devices over time, leading to failure when they are eventually powered on.

Time for an experiment. Put a USB-stick with some files in a microwave, turn it on with 100 W power and see if the files are still present afterwards. Tell us the results. You might need to add a glass of water and use higher power,
