Silly icon probs

By richard ·
OK, here's a silly one for you.

I've just installed a new win2k pro sp4 PC, with office 2k pro and the usual acrobat etc etc. Suddenly, mid session, all the program desktop icons (ie not my computer, network neighborhood etc) decided they were going to change their icon to the standard 'my computer' icon. Strange thing is, it hasn't just replaced the correct icon, but juxtaposed it over the top....for eg I can see the green corners of the excel icon sticking out from behind the my computer icon. In the start menu they are fine, but if you use windows explorer to view the start menu they all have my computer icons.

I'm an old hat at win2k, and I've tried everything I can think of. I've tried recreating the shortcuts. I've tried copying the shortcuts from other directories and other machines. You can't manually change the icons cos they think they are already pointing to the correct one. I've tried reinstalling various apps. I've tried replacing explorer.exe. I've tried deleting and recreating the users profile (it happens under all profiles by the way).

Has anyone any suggestions before I just rebuild the thing??

Did u fix it or just reinstall the driver?
It's definitely the right vid driver...it's a standard dell machine, using a driver I've used on a thousand other machines in our company. I'll try a reinstall though, in case it has become corrupt.

Thanks for the help but it's not this - as I've said I've already tried deleting the users profile which is where the personal cache file is held. I've also deleted the shelliconcache from winnt dir. Neither worked. Also, it's my program icons not the windows icons which are giving me the grief.
