simple W2k install

By karl ·
Ive installed Nt with few problems, but W2K is giving me trouble. I want to install a W2K as a PDC (it will be the only server), set up a 5 user group and a share.
Sound simple but Id appreciate some help. Is there anywhere I can get a simple step by step instructions to do this. For instance is the server part of a "domain" or a "workgroup"..I know it needs to be a member of the workgroup but it should also be the primary domain controller.
The server will be nothing more than a file server.Any help appreciated. PS I downloaded a couple of the step by step instructions from here but they asked more questions than I could answer.

The answer to your question about the server depends on you. Do you want it as a domain server or just another member of a workgroup?

The only difference between a domain and workgroup is that a domain contains a PDC, BDC, and File servers.

If you want to make a PDC than yes, you need to create a domain to go with the server.

However, if there are only 5 PC's with no other PC's in the group or organization (if applicable) then a workgroup would be easier and more feasible.

There is no longer a distinction between PDC and BDC in W2K. All servers are either member servers or domain controllers. All W2K servers install as member servers. During the install just join a workgroup. To make it a DC, you have to run a utility called dcpromo. This can be done from the run box or a command prompt. Dcpromo is a step-by-step wizard that's pretty straight forward. For instructions, I would check out www.microsoft.com/technet. Good luck.

if im wright in thinking that you will be using your PDC for local purposes then i would install as domain (yourdomainname.local) once you have installed and configured your PDC then you can add a child domain to your trusted domains, ie: (workgroup)and configure in AD to trust your computers in your workgroup.

sorry this is a bit brief but at this moment time is against me so if you have any other issues regarding this then post here andi will give you a more detailed step by step asap.

good luck
