I recently upgraded my motherboard (Abit NI8 SLI), CPU (Pentium 805) and RAM (Kingston 2x1GB ddr667). I formatted my hard drive and attempted a fresh installation of windows xp with a slipstreamed disk that includes SP2. I’ve used this disk before with no problems installing windows xp. This time, however, while installing windows, the installation errored out while looking for files for SP2. The dialog box that popped up would indicate it was looking for the files on the disk, I had no other choice but to click cancel. The rest of the installation seemed to go fine, and I was able to log in to windows as admin. While in XP, I could see that it stated that SP2 was installed, but I could not start Windows Firewall and in the General tab on Windows properties, my CPU was not listed (RAM was, but not the CPU) even though in Task Manager and in the BIOS I could see that it is listed as a dual processor.
I reformatted the drive and tried re-installing with another slipstreamed disk and OEM copy of XP with SP2, and it gives me the same errors at the same place during the installation.
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas of what might be causing this, and if I could just do a reinstallation of SP2 on my “botched” installation I have now in order to fix things.
