Slow access to shared folders over LAN

By malinowski.m ·
Hello there!
I have a small LAN (5 PC, one designated as server). I'm experiencing problem with initial access to shared folders on server. It takes 30~60 seconds to open folder in Explorer for the first time. Then access is really fast. If I do not access files on server for some time the situation reappears; again it takes long time to open the folder.
All machines are running WinXP with the most recent patches.
I have HW router running DHCP (assigning fixed IP adresses to all workstations and to server) and DNS forwarding (not full DNS).
Not using domain, all PC are in single workgroup.
No WINS, NetBIOS used over TCP/IP.
I tried to set HOST file on workstations, no difference.
Any idea, what might be wrong?

In Windows Explorer, open the network folder that contains the file that you are trying to open or save.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
Click Use Windows classic folders, and then click OK

if that helps, check out complete article 328170 at support.microsoft.com
