Slow Access

By Cluby ·
We are running NT 4 on a Netbeui Protocal, with 10 desktops running 98 se2. The problem is that I have one machine that will take up to 5 mins to contact to the Access 2000 database. All other machines connect within a minute. We have trying connecting this first before the other machines connect and it is no difference in time.

Any suggestions would be great.

It seems that the error is definitely on that station only. Try the following:
1. make sure your only running Netbeui
2. Make sure you are running the latest Driver for your method of connection (ie ODBC), and Network drivers.
3. Check your Distance of that machine in relation to the Server.
If using an Ethernet HUB try canging the cable and/or using a different port.

Usually when we connect more than 10 stations to our database we use TCP/IP or even IPX. I found IPX to be the Fastest in Database Connectivity.

also try another NIC It could be causing broadcast storms.

Good Luck Let me know how you do.

I know you said 'the contact' was slow, but I had the exact same scenario, only it wasn't exactly the connection that took the time.

The slow PC simply took a very long time to load the Access application. After a lot of testing, I realized it was simply low on RAM. Boosting that PC from 64Mb to 128Mb cured it. Interestingly, two PC's that had much slower CPU's but plenty of RAM were always much faster in loading Access, than the faster PC with only 64Mb.

I also had an earlier problemwith a conflict between a DOS program and the virus-scan program running together on a client Win98 PC. That combination would drastically slow down the Access database connection when pulling it from the NT server.

Hope this helps,
Howard H.
