Slow browsing W2K server with Win98

By doconnor ·
Is there a reason why Win 95/98 is slow when browsing on a W2K server? Is there a fix for this problem?
Thanks,
Debbie

Slow browsing W2K server with Win98

This is usually caused by the name resolution process that your machines go through to reach the server. Try browsing to the server using just the IP address (IE \\10.20.30.40\sharename), if that's quicker then check the name resolution setup that your machines use. Adding a your wins servers to the ipconfig of your win2k server if it doesn't already have it would be a good place to start. Hope this helps...

The reason for this is because Win 95/98 use Netbios Name resolution as their primary means of communicating; W2k uses DNS. You options to speed up browsing are simple either implement WINS, or edit your LMHosts file (systemroot/system32/drivers/etc) and include an entry for all Hosts the workstations will be connecting to on each machine. Deciding on which solution to use will depend on the size of your network however. Good luck
