Slow browsing with XP in NT4 network

I have an NT 4.0 network and am introducing XP workstations. I have noticed that XP handles network browsing at a significantly slower rate than 98 machines. This has started to cause some files to lockup when trying to save to network folders that contain thousands of files. Is there a setting that can be change to increase network browsing speed?
