Slow connection w/56k modem

By LVMike ·
I can only get a 42,667 connection anymore. Should I look at my modem first for problems, or could it just be modifying some modem settings?

You can check with your ISP about an initialization string for your particular modem when connecting to their modems. Generally, the problem of modems connecting at a slower rate has to do with either 1) the connection of the modem to jack or 2) the telephone line itself. The exception to this is HSP modems. HSP modems use your computer's CPU for some of the processing. If you have many processes running in the background as the modem is connecting, it might be possible that the modem can'tnegotiate the maximum speed.

Check to make sure that your modem plug directly into the wall jack with the shortest possible phone cable. Sometimes, a high quality phone cable (not one supplied with the new phone you got for Christmas) will make a difference. Check to make sure that any other devices (phones or answering machines) connected to that jack (either via a line splitter or through the "telephone" port on your modem) aren't causing you a problem.

Last but not least, you can have your local telephone company check your line, but usually, if your line will support 1200 baud (yep that's 1.2Kb) they will tell you that your line will support "data" transmissions.

Hope this helps!

When you have a 56k modem, most people don't really realize that their modem has the capability of connecting UP TO 56k, it doesn't mean that it always WILL connect at 56k. It will attempt to connect as close to that as possible, but a lot of the times it won't. As one of the other messages left here states, you can call the phone company and ask them to "clean your lines". Or you can try one of the other suggestions, I would of course do the regular maintence as in scan disk and defrag andthen I might even uninstall the software for my ISP and reinstall it again. Hope this helps!

Try some other phone numbers to your isp. what you need to make sure is that you have the shortest connected call to your isp. Also you may want to string a phone line from your phone junction box in your house directly to your phone. Also you can try upgrading your current inhouse telephone cable to a better quality. I had to get the phone company to re-string from the line from the telephone pole to the my house, it was over 20 years old and the crosstalk was causing a lot of degraded communication with my connection speed. On a good day I connect up to 50,000 bps.

Your modem is OK. You have a problem with your telephone line. I am using 56k modem. I?ve had max speed 31.2Kbps until I had installed 2nd telephone line (copper/straight connection). Now I have speed 48Kbps ? still not 56Kbps. All this depends on your telephone line, a distance to the exchange station and ISP.
