Slow desktop refresh (Redraw)

By schuck ·
I have a new Pc with Windows XP Home (w/SP1 and all current updates), 2.5gig, 512 RAM, 120 meg HD.

The desktop and folder contents do not automatically refresh. Example: if I create a new folder (or file) on the desktop, it won't show up till I right click and choose "Refresh". If I rename it, same thing, new name won't appear till the desktop is refreshed. Delete the folder/file, same thing... stays till I refresh. Same things happen when working in a folder. However, things refresh/redraw normally when working in a folder SHORTCUT.
Everything else seems to be working correctly on the PC. I cannot pinpoint the installation of a certain piece of software that may have caused this issue, but am not sure. An not crazy about wiping the drive and starting over though! <: I have tried "repairing" the WinXP OS by using the install disks and virtually re-installing it all over again. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!
