Slow down with NT 4.0 Server

By rgrowcock ·
I recently installed NT 4.0 server on a new machine with a new HDD, 15 GB 7200RPM Maxtor. Everything worked fine until I converted to NTFS, and now there is a major slow down in all applications. I have applied SP6a, but it didn't help. I am running this on a HP Pavilion 533Mhz Cerelon, with 64 MB Ram. Worked fine until I converted to NTFS. Any ideas before I reinstall Server? Thanks

If you have it handy, try doubling the RAM to 128 MB and increase the size of your swap file accordingly. Of course, with a Celeron processor, this might actually slow things down further. Anyway, WinNT is seriously cramped with only 64 MB of RAM.

although your system was working faster before hand i agree that 64 cramps nt's style. try defraging with diskeeper lite first. then try to up to 128mb and then up cache file. Remember with ntfs your system has to perform a few more steps when opening, closing, deleting and moving files. It is based on the file system architecture, ntfs uses a security scheme in its file management and this can tax smaller size memory.

I had tried loading NT 4.0 WS on a Compaq Deskpro EP with a Celeron 333MHz CPU w/ 64MB and it was incredibly slow. I found out from Intel that NT just doesn't like running on a Celeron processor. If you can't switch to a PII or PIII, I would agree w/ the others, bump up your memory to at least 128MB.
