Slow hard drive?

By Nate Dawg ·
I have an Athlon 1.1Ghz with 256mb PC133 & ATA 100 hard drive. Windows 'boot-up' is fairly slow & the first time I start any program, it takes a little bit, but any time after the first, it is very quick. How can I solve this?

You did not mention what operating system you are running
1)Use Run box and type in MSconfig, run trouble shooting on start up,check the performance tab to see if computer is running at optimal
2)It could be a corrupt registry or files
3)Could bethe number of fonts that are loading on the machine
Run scandisk to check for hard drive errors
4)Disable any screen savers that might be loading at startup

Certain programs load during start-up like your anti-virus, your audio console, etc. Although windows seems ready, these programs might still be loading which explains the slow start of your first program. Check ur harddrive for any activity before starting a program.
For a clean boot, run MSConfig (System Configuration Utility) from System Info. At the startup tab uncheck redundant entries and programs u wont need but be careful. You can also uncheck process config.sys and autoexec.bat whichare not needed by Win98. Although both may be needed by certian drivers and programs as they usually initiate memory managers and anti-virus bootscan. scans.

First, do you have an ATA 100 cable? Second, is the hard drive jumpered correctly, ie. a single Western Digital needs the jumper set to neutral (or removed).

Here are a few things to consider. "Why is it the faster the PC the slower it takes windows to boot?" Can somebody answer this? Anyway, definetely check any virus scanner you have running. Mcafee is very merciless on a system. I have a PIII 800at home which completley booted in under 25 seconds. I actually timed it with a stop watch. After installing mcafee it would not fully boot in under 1 minute 45 seconds, and that was scanning system files only. Imagine if I told it to scan all files. So definetly check that first.

After that, check to make sure that all your drivers are 32 bit drivers. Remove any nonessential drivers from the autoexec and config.sys files if they exist.

Also, go through "Start," "Programs," "Start Up." Remove any files aren't neccessary. Especially pay attention to anything that has to do with Microsoft Office. Get rid of find fast and optimizer definetly.

I guess I should clarify that when I say nonessntial drivers that I mean things like DOS based drivers for sound cards and CDROMS. Not things like HIMEM.

Applications open faster the second time because they are cached upon opening them the first time.
