Slow in opening network folders

By Eminent87 ·
Hi,

I have a windows xp pro machine that is really slow in opening files and folders from the network and from our file servers. The weird part is that it takes much longer to open up a folder as you get deeper into the folder directory structure. The first folder opens pretty quick but as you get deeper, it can take up to 15-40 seconds to open it up. It's only happening to this one desktop only. Are there any configuration I should check?

Info about our network: all or our servers are windows 2003 server and are running 1gb transfer rate. All stations are either xp pro or 2000 running at 100mb.

I have sp2 with all the latest updates and patches so this is not an issue.

I forgot to mention but this problem only happens to one of the file server. All the other server it works fine.

Could go to the "old school" and put another PC on the same connection and see is performace matches. If so wiring problem, more errors in transmission as you attempt to go deeper into the file system to retrieve data.

Disable simple file sharing. Empty the recent docs list and in the my network places folder delete the links to the network shares. If they are not the shares need to be mapped or by using a script that maps them at login.

Plus stop the XP box from being a browse mater and it will stop fighting the server. The settings for this is under services.

Delete not connected Shares in "MY Computer".
If you really have not connected shares/drives there, browsing should also be slow for local drives.

Hope this helps..
