For some reason lately, on our Windows 2000 Server PC, when logging in after a reboot, it hangs at "loading personal settings" for almost 30m before loading to the desktop. Afterwards, until it reboots again, logins load just fine. This is for both locally and remotely using Terminal Services. All updates applied. No viruses or spyware before anyone says so. Any ideas? Thanks.

Many times a slow logon can be a result of improper DNS configuration. The Make sure your primary DNS in the TCP/IP properties is set for a Domain controller, that is running DNS for the domain
This has been causing havoc in the IT industry just now. And to top it off APC didnt even email registered users of this proplem. Microsoft are still working the problem this morning, i found this tonight by chance although Microsoft now it is Powerchute causing it, they dont know why, do now i suppose.
Is it reporting that any services have failed to start?? Create another administrator's account and logon with that account. Does it also take a long time?? IF not then the problem is in the user profile you attempting to log on with.
Do you have a APC UPS connected to server? If so you probably have the APC management / agent software installed. Recent updates to both Mcafee and Norton AV programs cause the APC services to hang (version 6) If you have the APC software installed upgrading to version 7.x will fix the problem. You can check by going into services and checking for the APC server / agent services and see if they are 'starting'
