Here's a link for WInXP changes that will speed up your system:

Remove any embedded spaces from the above link when pasting into your browser.

You can also do this to speed up your Menu:

Run REGEDIT.EXE
Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Select MenuShowDelay on the right and change it to 0
Reboot your computer

Are you logging into a domain? I've seen slow logon problems as a result of a improperly set up DNS. DNS is how active directory talks to itself in Windows 2000. Check the server. Make sure the server points to itself in the DNS configuration and set up forwarders for internet addresses. Hope this helps.

1. Get rid of Windows Messenger at startup. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE \Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run subkey and delete the MSMSGS value.

2. Dispense with balloon pop-ups. Navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced subkey and set the EnableBalloonTips hexadecimal value to 0.
