Slow Modem: Registers Lots!!

By rubysnowdragon ·
Experiencing incredibly slow online time.
Have a Pentium II, 32 megs, running Win98
with an HSP micromodem on board. Drive is
running constantly.

Notice that the modem registers receiving WAY
more than is being sent, e.g. "2578383 bytes received," "658923 bytes sent." Even downloads where the amt is known never check out right -- always way more received than being sent.

Is this a prob with my modem? Should I/should I not replace it? Or software prob.

The serial port is slower than your modem and causing a overrun, first update the driver before investing in a new modem, there is no easy fix for the over run.

Need more information, e.g. the name or type of driver you suggest.

The most difnitive answer to your question can be found on CNET.com. The best solution that I had found for my sluggish modem was to get a utility called tweak.dun. Try the CNET article it may help. Her is the URL: (http://www.gamecenter.com/Hardware/Doit/Modemtweak/?tag=st.cn.sr.gc.2) just cut and past it into your address window on your browser and hit enter. I hope this helps.

It may not be your modem.

I had a similar situation that turned out to be related to RealAudio running in the background and downloading who knows what onto my hard drive.

As far as the registers, it would be unusual for them to be anywhere near equal unless you were serving Web pages. It only takes a couple bites to tell a Web server what you want, but the content delivered will be thousands of bytes.

amounts are amounts - not a big deal unless a serious discrepancy. After all, when Joe upload labels his file for size, he says 800K. That might mean 800,000 bytes, or 819,200 bytes, depending on his mood. Try turning up the baud rate on the COM port the modem is installed on. Default is 9600 - turn it up to the closest setting you have for your modem (probably 57600). Setting it higher might help your download speed, but upload won't go higher than 53333.

The modem is register FIVE TIMES the amount sent. E.g, 200K sent,
1MB through the modem. The drive is working constantly and pages
are read at stone age pace.
