    Slow Modem Response

    Locked

    by ewok ·

I am running Windows ME on an AMD Athlon 800mhz. I recently installed a network card in preparation for DSL. Ever since the network card install my 56k modem reliability is less then desirable. Sometimes my internet connection works just fine…meaning, If I goto a URL or click on a link it takes me their immediately…and other times I can wait up to a minute or two before it responds. When it seems not to respond I can check my email and it will say “connecting” and sit on that screen..then all of a sudden I jump to the URL I choose and my email checks itself just fine. I have tried to figure this problem out for the past 2 weeks with no luck. I HOPE somebody can help me here.

    Thanks,

    Michael

it sounds like your computer is confused on to which io port to connect to the internet to un confuse your computer you must go to start menu-setting-control panel double click on the internet options and press the tab button (connections) check to see your dial up connection is set up to the correct modem. remember the computer will search for a connection we dont want a search we just want it to dial then go to the network icon in the control panel and ensure the tcp/ip protocol is configured window will automatical manage all your protocols as long as you set the correct bindings for each com port

Don’t know if it has anything to do with your ports but if you want you can try this web site http://www.netsetter.com and sign up.. It’s free and it optimizes your modem for faster performance. I never thought it would work but when I signed up and it optimized my modem, it actually worked. Hope this helps.

Remove your network card and see if the
problem is still there. It sounds like an
interrupt conflict. You can also try switching
your network card to another slot.

      Cheers
