Slow network access from MS Office 2003

by manders . Updated 18 years, 8 months ago

I’m troubleshooting a really annoying problem and finding lots of matches to my symptoms, but no solutions to my problem. Hopefully someone will have encountered this one before.

* Windows XP SP2 w/ patches
* MS Office 2003 SP2 w/ patches
* Accessing a network drive mapped through “net use” command and authenticating via a domain controller the PC does not itself belong to (i.e. net use H: \\server\share$ * /USER:Domain\Username)

Whenever I attempt to open files from the share in any MS Office application, the app freezes for approximately 10-15 seconds before making the attempt. When I save, the time is closer to 20-30 seconds. This time is always more or less constant regardless of the size of the file – a 20k Word file takes 15 seconds to open, while a much larger file might take 16-17 seconds.

Other applications (such as WordPad) does not have this problem at all, reads and writes to the share almost instantaneously. Also, other mapped shares (residing on Windows servers not joined to a domain, Linux servers, or Linux servers joined to a domain via Samba) work fine with MS Office.

Any insights?
