Slow network browsing in Windows 2000

By mederose ·
Whenever I open a document from a mapped network drive, Windows 2000 takes a long time to display the mapped drives. For example, in Word when I select file open and click the down arrow it takes about 5-8 seconds to display mapped drives.

More than likely it's a quality of service issue. The mapped drive actually drops to save connections on the server when not in use. When you open stuff on the drive it takes a few seconds to connect. You can change this by keeping something open that uses services on the mapped drive or BROWSE the drive letter before using any programs that need data on it.

you should give us more input in your question

is both client and server 2000?

tip - is there a cd in your client's drive?
- try to remove it and check again

- check you DNS settings on server and client if in an active directory domain
