Slow response when opening .txt file

By cfox ·
I cannot open a .txt file, the computer acts like it wants to open the file but it never does. Not only am I getting slow responses but I can't even right click and go into properties. I have tried to open notepad and I get the same slow response and it never opens. I have reinstalled windows SP2 but that didn't help either.I ran a virus scan and it came back clean. What could possibly be causing this to happen?

Check the file size. If it's large, Notepad may not be able to handle it -- and nothing will happen. (Yay MS.)

Instead, open WordPad and do a File/Open..., that should at least let you see the file.

I'd also strongly suggest getting a copy of UltraEdit (www.ultraedit.com) which handles text (and binary!) files of unlimited size.

Have you try Check Disk (Error-checking Tool in the drive's Properties)? It seems to me that you have corrupted files!

Have you tried copying the file to a different disk and/or folder?
If it will not allow you to copy then the file is corrupted.
If it does allow you to copy it, then it might still be corrupted just not on the disk level. So try opening it on another computer (try not using a network just local HardDrive), if it doesn't work on another computer then it sounds like it's corrupted. Try opening it in Dos using EDIT.

Try opening a DOS window and then use a DOS command to see if you can edit or list the file. Windows sometimes gives you dubious results. DOS will usually supply a more "true" answer. YOu will then know if the file is corrupt.
