Make sure you viruscan is current and running. If it isn't get Stinger from:

Download install and fully update both SpyBot Search & Destroy 1.40 ( and Adaware Personal 1.06
( Remove everything they find.

You might also run checkdis by selecting the two boxes on Check Disk Options it C: Drive\ Properties\Tools\Error Checking. Then reboot and it will check your drive for irregularities.

How many emails do you have stored in your email client?

As the mail storage files get larger, it takes your email client longer to open and process the data. The mail program will also use a lot more system resources if you have a lot of messages stored.

If you are running Outlook, look at the size of your .pst file. If it is over 50 MB, you will see a big improvement in speed by just saving your older mail as individual files and deleting them from the mail program.

If you are running Outlook Express, it starts to slow down when the total of all .dbx files is larger than 10 MB.

Again, the answer is to reduce the number of messages stored by the mail program itself.

Save the messages that you want to keep and delete them from Outlook Express.
