Slow task bar responses

By MLawton ·
Running Windows XP Home addition. Whenever I try and access anything from my Windows task bar it takes forever to launch and I mean 30 seconds plus. I have run McAffee Virus Scan, Trojan Remover, Ad-aware, Spybot and nothing helps. Any clues would be helpful in fixing this problem. Thanks!

Once Windows lauches, right click on the task bar (wait the 30 seconds), and open the task manager. Check out the processes tab and see if any specific process is sucking up all of the CPU usage. Most likely you may have an errant program or app that is taking up a lot of resources causing the Start Menu and such to open slowly. You may also want to check the Startup folder or Start->Run->msconfig->Startup tab to see if there are any unnecessary programs starting up with the OS.

Hope that helps!

The next option would be to check if your visual settings are set too high.

Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced Tab -> Under Performance click the Settings button.

In the list, remove some of the less useful components. I have XP Home at my home and turned everything off except for the following:

- Show shadows under menus
- Show shadows under mouse pointer
- Show translucent selection rectangle
- Show window contents while dragging
- Smooth edges of screen fonts
- Use a background image for each folder type
- Use common tasks in folders
- Use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop
- Use visual styles on windows and buttons

Turn everything else off.

Give that a shot and let us know!
