Small Business Server 4.5 and NTBackup

By jyimcse ·
Just started working on HP Netserver E60 with a seagate Tapestor Travan 8GB Atapi. The tape drive works when I manually do back up using NTBackup. I schedule an unattend using AT command. The back works for a couple of days then stops working. I try to run NTbackup and nothing. I can't get it to come up. Task manager shows ntbackup.exe as a process that is running. When I try to end process, access denied. I reboot the server and then I can access NTbackup, but it says foreign tape loaded, even though it is the same tape. I erase the tape and run back up and it works. The unattend back up sometimes works, nut most of the time it does not. The first scheduled back up or two days latter, the Ntbackup hangs. Server is still up, but I can't access NTBackup unless I reboot the server. Problem with SP3, and SP4. I even tried IE4 with the Task Scheduler that replaces the Schedule service. Any ideas?

Here's several:
Short term - see MS knowledgebase article Q171773 - it details use of Resource Kit program KILL.EXE that can be used to kill hung processes.

Solving the problem:
1) Use the /INTERACTIVE switch with the AT command for the backup. If any errors occur, you will be able to correct them and continue or quit Windows NT Backup.

To use the /interactive switch you must configure the scheduler service to log on as the SYSTEM ACCOUNT and Allow Service To Interact With Desktop by using Control Panel - Services, highlight Scheduler and pressing the Startup button.

2) Check the drivers for the tape drive - doubtful but possible

3) I've had this occur before when the backup encounters an error on the tape -or- needs anothertape. Depending on what type of backup you are running and whether you are appending or overwriting the tape, this could be the culprit - 1) should resolve this and let you see what's occurring.

4) Check the event log to see if there are any errors being reported - t

Thanks for the suggestion. I still don't know what is making NTBackup stall. I need it to be dependable so I will probably start from scratch and try to eliminate the problem.
