Can anyone suggest reasoning why it would be beneficial for small to mid-range company who has the potential to grow to consider automating their desktop deployment? Also, in this company technology is not at the top of their list of priorities. They understand they need some technology but are slow to budget any money for this area. Everything is working and they have gotten complacent. I'm looking for the best way to approach them not only for deployment but set myself up to create a budget plan for the entire infrastructure.

There are many reasons to automate system deployment.
The real factor is "return on investment." How much money is spent deploying desktops now and how much will it cost to automate it?
If you aren't in the middle of a desktop deployment, it doesn't make sense to spend thousands of dollars to deploy an automated desktop deployment system.
The real advantage to automate deployment is that it *consistent* but it can also be faster.
We use Altiris at work and when set up properly you can plug in a new computer and 15 min later the user can logon to the domain and check their email etc with all of the software to do their job. There is an open source project for this that i read in Linux Journal a couple of months back that looked good.
Also the tools that Microsoft is providing with win7 should make thing a lot easier.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
