Smart devices in the workplace taking up IP addresses

By MilehighIT ·
Hello. I manage a small network and have been noticing the shortage of IP addresses in DHCP. Besides workstations we have VOIP phones taking the majority of our IP addresses. But now with smart phones, iPad's and other mobile devices connecting to networks I was wondering how I.T. Managers approach users connecting to company wireless networks with their personal devices.

Do you want more IP addresses, or to limit connections?

If people are using devices a lot for non-work-related activity, start filtering MAC addresses or something. If you expect these devices, expand the range of your private IP space, or start NATting devices so that more than one device shares an IP address the same way wireless internet providers do.
