I'm going to replace a hard drive that's clicking.

It sound ominous when all of my other hard drives are silent. SMART errors are warnings worth heeding.

Well it's not a good sound

But as to if the drive need replacing you should test it with Seatools for DOS available here

http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=SeaTools&vgnextoid=720bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

If the drive fails this test replace it. If it doesn't fail the test test often.

While I do tend to agree with you here

I did get one drive returned from Seagate that sounds positively nasty.

It's a Rebuild after failing and as such doesn't have any acceptable warranty. It does pass the Seatools Test and has worked in an external Caddy for over 3 years now but it's not something that I place any trust in and after filling it up it now lives in a Plastic HDD Container in a Safe.
