Smartarray 642 RAID 1

I had a smartarray 642 running on RAID 1 with 2 HDD.If the SCSI HDD with ID 0 which where the O.S is installed failed ,will it means my O.S is gone and need to reinstalled again.

Hi there,

RAID 1 is mirroring the drive so the HDD with ID 0 should have a exact mirror image on HDD ID 1 .

RAID 1 needs a minimum of 2 drives to work, so if youve only got the 2 HDD, then you would have all your data mirrored, not just the OS, dependent on the partitionoing setup.

You would need to break the mirror and then replace HDD ID 0 and then allow the drives to re-sync to get the RAID 1 working again.

Yes it should continue to operate, but the idea of RAID 1 is to protect the data on the drives - to continue running the system with one dead drive means that if something was to happen to the other disk, everything would be lost, data and O/S.

Thks for the reply.I have't configure the system yet as I'm in the planning
Base on ur explanation will it means by O.S also been mirrored and even my ID0 is dead the ID1 HDD will still run on with my O.S
