Hi All,
Recently (within the last 6 months or so, its’ tough to notice email you never get!) I’ve noticed that some SMTP senders seem to be configured to do a reverse DNS look up on the recipients’ domain. And when there is not PTR record for the recipient (not the sender) the mail gets bounced with a 553 No such domain or some such error.
Example:
5.1.2 – Bad destination host ‘DNS Hard Error looking up xx.xx.xx.xx (MX): NXDomain’ (delivery attempts: 0)
The xx.xx.xx.xx is the IP of www.thedomain.com which does not do mail.
The domain is a small company and has google do their mail hosting, so all the MX records point to a google or googlemail host. Also the company doing their web hosting will not create a PTR record for the domain (shared IP hosting).
Is there anything that can be done about this?
The company does not want to spend more money to 1) get a dedicated IP, 2) do their own mail hosting. Is there something else that can be done?
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Also what is the point of doing a reverse look up on the recipient?
Steve
