SMTP Service Never Starts SBS 2003

By med103 ·
The SMTP Service on my SBS 2003 computer is continually
starting and never starts. I keep getting this message
SMTPSVC service is Start Pending.

This service transports electronic mail across the network. If this
is stopped, messages are not delivered to the recipients.

For more information about this event, see the event logs on the
computer. You can restart this service by using the View Services
task in
the Server Management Monitoring and Reporting taskpad.

You can disable this alert by using the Change Alert Notifications

The start, stop, pause etc. buttons are grey out and unavailable.
What could be the problem?

Command Line

by BFilmFan In reply to SMTP Service Never Starts ...

If you go to a command line and type net start smtpsvc does that work?

Is the RPC service running?

It still says starting in the services list. The RPC and RPC locator
both say started. I've tried the SMTPSVC as Manual and Auto and
now command line and the start stop etc buttons stay greyed
out. What else could it be?

Server Bounce

by BFilmFan In reply to

Have you re-booted the server? I am supicious that a process thread is hung and failing to release.

If that doesn't work, I would give Microsoft a call as I cannot locate any information from Microsoft TechNet or friends that have seen this issue either.

Doh! Restarting fixed that problem, but I still can't access my
users and groups. Arrgh!
Thanks very much,
