SMTP Sessions Remain Open

Just noticed that SMTP Session stayed open for over 500 seconds on our Exchange 2000 Server (W2K Op Sys). May or may not be related, but Server was locked when we came in this am. Had to reboot. Is there a way to cause sessions to automatically close after certain length of time? Any other suggestions?
