Why would I always have to use a clean vanilla image on a system to create a snappshot ? Can I not just do it without problems on my workstation ?

You don't, but the cleaner the machine when running snapshot, the better. Too many applications use shared dll's, if they are already available on the system. Running vanilla installations forces each new app to load it's particular DLL's, which prevents those minor annoying blue screens of death.

hope this helps

forgot to add. If you have a well tuned system, and you only want to use snapshot to repair that one unique workstation, then taking a single snapshot of it is just fine.

Vanilla etc is recommended when you are deploying a number of identical machines with the same applications loaded on each.
