SNMP Server ? why do I need it ?

By jsarinana ·
I have a raid 5 server running NT4.0 service pack 5. I recently lost a h.d. and swapped it out with a new replacement.

I was asked by my server support person where we bought the server to load there Global Array Manager s.w. which will help better manage my raid 5.

I downloaded the s.w. and when I tried to install, the install wants me to install snmp service.

What is snmp service ? what is it for ? what are the installation steps involved ?

Do I need to back snmp a certain way ?
My server support did not have a good answer.

What is snmp service ?

The Simple Network Management Protocol(SNMP)is an application-layer protocol that facilitates the exchange of management information between network devices. It is part of the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol suite.

what is it for ?
SNMP enables network administrators to manage network performance, find and solve network problems, and plan for network growth.

what are the installation steps involved ?

Rt. Click Network Neighborhood, select properties.
Select services tab, click Add, select snmp service. Click ok , u may be asked for winnt server cd , u may have to restart to start the service. Thats it .

Good luck

SNMP is a network management protocol. Since you're using a Global-type program, I'm assuming it communicates with the other raid servers using SNMP. You'll need it for this to work. And on all servers participating in the global program..

The information above is all absolutely correct. Here is a little more info on SNMP:

SNMP allows any snmp capable device on the network such as switches, routers, NICs, and other medium to high-end networking hardware to communicate with eachother via SNMP messages. SNMP management software, such as HP Ovenview's Network Node Manager Suite, grabs all of this SNMP info to keep a constant map of how the network is functioning, where there are bottlenecks or breaks, and expansion possibilites(as well as many other functions).

All the answers above are good. Just one thing to add that is don't forget to re-apply your NT service pack after installed the SNMP service. Otherwise unexpected result may occur after the reboot.

Good luck.
