So many routers/firewalls/gateways/etc??

By bossdog22 ·
What's the best, but relatively inexpensive router available for home networks? I see SO many available with firewalls that have only NAT, some others have SPI(stateful inspection) & the list of features goes on and on. I'm in the process of selecting a hardware based firewall (I already have software installed my machines) but I really can't tell which ones (if any) are superior in performance. Additionally, I'd like to stay away from wireless routers. Can anyone recommend a couple of products? Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

For routers most popular brans are D-link and Linksys. Since they are not going to be wireless you can get them for about $50.00 from your local computer store.

For firewalls they are Norton, Zone Alarm, Mcafee, etc.

Recommend you look for a stateful firewall rather that one that just does NAT as this will prevent certain types of attacks. They are a little more expensive though. Do you need dial up as backup or VPN capability? If so, this cuts your choice down even further. There are only a couple DLink DI804-V, a Netgear and a Compro there may be others but perhaps not available where I am. Recommend that you use a proper firewall on the PC as well such as the free versions of Zonealarm or Kerio. You can check your security at to see if it can probe your ports just don't do this at work or your security people will wonder what is happening to the firewall.
