So many ".tmp" files

By TopesBlues ·
On some of our PCs I am finding large amounts of .TMP files in the C:\WINDOWS directory. The files have names like
ffcO14d6{C6EC50EO-6D0F-18AC-F004NCEB78C5}.tmp
and are 0KB in size. If anyone has an idea of where these files are coming from or how to prevent them from winding up in my C:\widows folder I would appreciate it.

Windows loves creating tmp files. What I do is schedule a batch file to delete the C:\windows\temp folder and *.tmp files.

I don't know if there's any way to prevent them. Creating temporary files is a normal part of how Windows and other software operate.

It is unusual for them to be in C:\Windows instead of C:\Windows\Temp, and it is also unusual to find a large amount, becuase whatever program creates them usually releases them when the program closes. Still, some do stick around.

If your system is experiencing no other performance problems, then I recommend adding a line to your autoexec.bat file:

echo y |del c:\windows\*.tmp

Viola! Every time the computer starts, the temp files are deleted.
BTW, | is the "pipe" character, it's located above the \ on my keyboard, but your mileage my cary.

These are temp files created by Office programs and like all good temp files after their use, they should die. However, there are some files in the temp directory that you may not want to delete. The guideline I use is if you can make some sense ofthem, keep them. If they have a name you can't pronounce, or the phrase tmp or temp or even a ~, kill them. The temp files you describe can die. the only way to prevent them is to not use Windows or Office. Probabily not an option.

Rememberwith Windows, when in doubt, reboot.
Temp files can be a source of trouble. They can save you too. Sometimes they are files you had open when your system crashed and you can change the extention and open them with the program you had open when you crashed. You can also find attachments you opened under Outlook and your Internet temp folder can have messages you had open under Outlook xps.
