Socket error

By yvonne ·
I am running Windows95 on a machine. I've started getting a Socket error 10004. It pops up about every 30 seconds. How in the world do I get it to stop?

According to the above site, socket error 10004 is an interrupted system call -- what are you running when this starts to happen?

If this is while browsing the Internet... then what browser and version are you using?

I'd recommend you begin by looking at the browser and if you are using Netscape, be using version 4.79 or later (6 or 7). If using Internet Explorer, use at least 5.5 or above.

If your browser is current, thenI suggest that you uninstall your network protocols and reboot, and then reinstall them.

Make sure that if you are using a firewall, that it is properly setup. And as a final resort, check with your ISP's support department.

This applies to Microsoft SQL Server if it is running on the network:
When the 16-bit sockets Net-Library (Dbmssoc3.dll) is used on a computer running Windows 95 to connect to SQL Server, the connection may time out with an operating system error -2. On the server side, a series of "17832 Unable to read login packet" errors are logged in the SQL Server errorlog. The errors appear to occur simultaneously at first, and the frequency of the error then changes to one error per second. This lasts for a period of time approximately equal to the LoginTimeOut set by the application.

Workaround
To work around this problem, do either of the following:

Install the updated Wsock.vxd file for Windows 95 discussed in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q175056 : "Error -2" in 16-Bit Program When Disconnecting from SQL Server

Hope this helps
