can win2000 software be used on a win xp system?

Yes it can.

Windows 2000 software should have no trouble running on Win XP.

I would expect 90 - 95% of your software that runs on W2K to run on a XP based system.

Many utilities in particular had to have new versions written for XP.
This includes CD burning, DVD players, Anti-Virus, and system utilities.

Most applications will work. Although, many users have had problems with legacy DOS applications.

The simple answer is yes. They use the same NTFs kernel.
The only thing i wouldn't do is install a winXP hardware driver on a Windows XP PC or vice verse.
