software compatibility (standards) testing

By hellbee ·
I'm trying to find a guide or checklist of some sort that gives a
methodology for testing application compatibility.

Most software testing guides are for QA in development. I'm
just looking for a formal way to certify software for my desktop
standards list.

There are several places to look for this:

CORPORATE standards testing, not development

by hellbee In reply to Standards

Bill, I was looking for test plans for certifying my list of
corporate standards, not software life cycle or anything like that.

Thanks just the same, though.

There are tools

I don't know the names off the top of my head, but I am sure you can google them.

One part of compatibility testing is ensuring that by installing a piece of software you don't disable another. There are tools which will allow you to document what registry items are modified, which DLLs are written or overwritten.

There are also tools which indentify which files, DLLs etc are called when a program is launched.

If you use these kinds of tools, you have a much better idea of whether the applications will play nicely together. But you probably want to consider doing some lab testing and field tests with a limited number of users, as additional steps.
