    Software compatibility with WinXP

    by kevin.walsh ·

Has anyone compiled a list of the earliest versions of software from the major software companies that work with XP? For example, software from Microsoft, Adobe, Symantec, Macromedia, etc. We’re being mandated to upgrade to XP (mostly from Win2000)and want to know what software upgrades will be required. I also know some hardware will become obsolete as well.

There are compatibility solutions for many programs. XP has some comprehensive compatibility tools built in.

For more information, try the XP section at Microsoft’s TechNet page:

Under the deployment branch are pages on both hardware and application compatibility.

      Common software issues include:
      CD burning programs
      Virus scanners

      Common hardware problems include
      Sound cards

On hardware, my advice is to check with the hardware manufacture. If they do NOT have a XP driver for you to download, assume that you WILL have problems with the hardware.

best idea is to get a list of programs and hardware together. Check the hardware against the hardware compatability list from Microsoft.

For the programs see if those vendors offer an XP version or not. If not, then you may need to decide if you need that program, or if there is another similar program that can replace it.
Most major vendors and many smaller ones have Win XP programs, but many drivers are not supported on XP even still, and many never will be (unless you write it yourself).
