Software imaging

By jean_baptiste_p ·
I work as a desktop support technician and I am constantly building desktops and intalling software on them, is there a way that I can create an image and copy that image on other desktops and servers that I setup.

Your answer on this will be of great help.

Thank you in advance.

Jean,

Products like Norton GHOST do exactly what you describe. The only gotcha tends to occur in environments that don't have standardized HW combined with NT4. The lack of plug-and-play can cause issues.

Try getting a eval of GHOST or DriveImage to see if it will work for you.

Good luck.

LabExpert by Altiris (www.altiris.com) is good also. For identically configured systems, HW & SW, this product uses one master image and two registry files for each PC supported. Recovery is great; it downloads the master, reboots, downloads that PCs registry settings, reboots to the OS. We use it to support our computer labs.

NT and NT RK Tools offer sysdiff and sysprep that you can use with imaging software to get around the SID issue. These allow you to configure OS plus applications and then clone the image to identical HW platforms.

Another thing you can do to reduce the number of rebuilds is to use policies to control what the users can do to themselves.
