Software Restriction Policy

By escheitz ·
Here is an article on adding software restriction policies, http://msdn.microsoft.com/security/securecode/columns/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dncode/html/secure01182005.asp My question is, in the article they how to enable the basic user setting by adding a registry tweak. This does not work for me, and was wondering if anybody else has tried this technique.

That is being added by an administrative template applied via a GPO. Try applying it via the loca security policy, unless you have a domain and can attach it to a domain or OU policy.

I have tried via local security policy, but i still cannot get the basic user option. All I get is the unrestricted and disallowed option. I am not sure I understand the registry entry to allow other options. I says to "Add a DWORD value named Levels set to 0x20000 to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Safer\CodeIdentifiers
But after I do i still do not get the basic user option...

Any help would be apprieciated.

I just tried it just as he said.

Regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Safer\CodeIdentifiers

Add a DWORD value named Levels

Set the value to 0x20000 (base hexidecimal)

After OK it will display as Levels REG_DWORD 0x411fffe9(1092616169)

It worked fine for me.

Good Luck,

razz

OK, thank you, but one thing. How come I cannot type the registry value. I can only paste it in. It will not let me enter anything except number.
