Software tracking

by kshields . Updated 25 years, 1 month ago

Are there any products out there that track application usage and fatal application errors?

I think there are a lot of reasons why our organization should track application usage and fatal errors (application crashes). We’ve started doing this ata very basic level and essentially we have a test group of workstations that logs application crashes and correlates this back to application usage.

Unfortunately we aren’t very sophisticated yet and the application usage used for the correlation is based on clock time of the app. in the foreground… not CPU utilization, which would give us better data where more intensive uses of the app. are taking place.

The thinking behind this is that the application data when combined with our inventory data (which reports on software application version information) will enable us to make more intelligent decisions as far as upgrading / deploying new products and general support where we try and do pro-active maintenance and change out “under performing” workstations- computers that take a lot of support time.

Am I way off base? Is there value in continuing with this test? Does anybody know of any products that attempt to do this? We are at appx. 250 workstations so budget / products would need to fit within this.

thx for any help you can provide,
KS
