SOHO Network Problem - shares not visibl

By ndluce ·
3 networked PCs, one with Windows 95, one with Windows 98, one with Windows XP; also one shared printer.
A problem developed where the XP computer could access and display the entire network, while the other 2 would not display the contents of Network Neighborhood nor display the entire network using Windows Explorer. However, any PC could print on the one shared printer.
Next problem: the situation flip-flopped -- the 2 older PCs with Win95 & Win98 could "see" each other on the network, while the WinXP PC "fell off" the network.
Another factor that may/may not have influence: Previously, the networked PCs had the opaserv worm which has been removed -- might that infection still be wreaking havoc?

Which machine has the printer attached?

Make sure you're not running any firewall software, if so, add all machines to the trusted list.

Regarding the opaserv worm, it can also be the culprit. Go to this link (remove any spaces) for complete removal instructions.

What ultimately worked was:
On the XP machine, I had to assign an IP address, presumably because the other 2 PCs had IP addresses assigned... Once the XP box had a similar IP address as the other 2, voila! The network worked!

make sure that the XP machine has a complete list of all users and passwords. The username and passwords for all logons must match exactly.

Reinstall your SOHO network on your XP machine. Use the Setup SOHO network wizard thru network neighborhood and just follow the on-screen instructions. Then go to your other pcs and install the service using your XP CD - perform additional tasks andselect Set up a home or small office network and simply follow the instructions. If this doesn't work, then check your network physical connections.

Yes, I reinstalled the SOHO network using the network wizard more than once. What ultimately worked was:
On the XP machine, I had to assign an IP address, presumably because the other 2 PCs had IP addresses assigned... Once the XP box had a similar IP address as the other 2, voila! The network worked!
