Solaris 8 CPU Utililization limits...

By rlbeaver ·
Okay, let me try this question a different way...

I was told that multiple CPUs can have total CPU of more
than 100% or exactly 100%. If you have 8 CPUs and if your
process fully occupies 1 CPU, then you may end up with
~12% CPU. If you have 8 CPUs and the configuration allows
800%, then you may end up with ~100% CPU usage.

Presuming this is true, is there a way to change the limit
without installing the Solaris Resource Manager?

It's not an answer, just comments.

I have Dual CPU Sun system (E250) with Solaris9. When you monitor CPU utilization, usually each process occupies one CPU. When I have an application running, I see 51-55% CPU utilization - 50% for "running" application and 1-5% for another processes. Whne you compile something, you have many processes running simultaneously, so, CPU utilization may hit 100%. So, if you have 8 CPUs, each CPU will give you 12% piece of 100% "system utilization"
