Solaris, Linux or Win2k

By process_of_learning ·
Hello everyone,

I have 30 Win2k Pro PCs which have to be connected in a network for accessing the Internet through a leased line. What's the most secure NOS to use, is it Solaris/Linux/Win2k. Any suggestions welcomed about any other security S/W.

Thanx in advance.

Your internal NOS should not matter. Protect your internal LAN from viruses with a good anti-virus checker.

Setup a Unix (Sun Solaris is fine or Linux) based firewall and learn how to patch and configure the firewall and OS and you'll be fine. Just keep it all up to date. I recommend Check Point's Firewall-1 ; I used it on an older Sun box awhile ago.

If you're looking for a NOS for the firewall/gateway or proxy, I recommend OpenBSD. It is one of the more secure *NIX like NOS' and works very well.

See http://www.openbsd.org for more info or write me; I'll help how I can.

If you're looking for a NOS to use as a router/gateway/firewall... why not just buy a router/firewall. You could buy a Cisco Pix 501 for half the cost of a server. Or go to Best Buy and get one for $100.
