Solution To No Sound On Dell Systems

By Richard89 ·
I recently had a problem with the sound on my Dell system. I started it
up one day and found a red X next to the speaker icon. After several
fruitless hours on the phone with Dell's worthless techs I decided that
I'd check the forums to see if anyone else was having the same
trouble as I was. I was stunned to find that ALL of the posts relating to
this topic were for Dell systems. Needless to say I won't be buying Dell
ever again. I finally found someone who said that they had resolved
the problem through Microsoft's tech support. The Microsoft tech
figured out that the problem is easily fixed by a quick trip to the
Registry Editor. This is the path you need to follow in Registry Editor:

In this folder you will see: DependOnService
Double click this and delete all the entries EXCEPT for: RpcSs

Now restart your system and your sound should be good as new.

Richard, thanks for posting this fix.

Your opinion of Dell's technical support is widely shared. Alas, you must not expect greener grass on the other side of the fence.

I'm a Sony fan, not because of terrific technical support, but because their hardware is durable and rarely misbehaves.

Sony continuously updates and posts relevant drivers for utilities and Sony software, so self-help is relatively painless.

I shall keep your Registry edit in my troubleshooting kit should the glitch ever surface.
