Some Internet sites work

By cbradshaw ·
I have a enw XP Pro machine that can access some Internet sites, but not others. Connection is DSL via LinkSys firewall/router. My other PC (2000 Pro)connected the same way can access all sites. I've tried using different browsers (Firefox, IE), different ports on the router and even changed out the router. Name resolution works fine, but the connection times out on the affected sites. If I direct-connect the PC to DSL it works, so I would tend to blame the router, but my other PC is fine. I have run out of ideas....

Is the XP system running the built-in firewall?

No, I have made sure it is not. Interestingly, Microsoft sites (Including Windows Update) are among those I cannot access.

Is your router blocking directX? Some sites require it, Microsoft Update included.

Otherwise, I would guess you may have malware or a virus interfering. Run apps to detect and remove.

Thanks, but that wasn't it.

Hey there, I would guess its the access that's the problem. Not the websites. (the Lynksys configuration.) Try this...
There has been an article I've been reading concerning websites not loading from an ICS client with XP. Give this on a try and good luck.

The MTU did it. Weird problem. Here's Microsoft's article which also gives a couple of other fixes:

I had the same problem and resolved it by setting the preferred dns server address to my router's ip instead of using the default to obtain the dns server automatically.

Cheers.
